Invincible . . . actually Mark Wahlberg's second film set in the 1970's. In Invincible, Wahlberg plays a 1970's football player with a really big heart. His other, of course, is Boogie Nights, where he played a 1970's porn star with a really big . . . ego?
Invincible is brought to us by the producers of The Rookie and Miracle and is based on the true story of Vince Papale. The movie takes place in the mid 1970’s when Philadelphia’s football team, The Eagles, had lost the support of their fans after a long string of losses. They hired a new coach, Dick Vermeil (played by Greg Kinnear) to help them turn things around. Mr. Vermeil tried something completely unconventional - he held open try-outs for anyone that wanted to join the team. Vince Papale (played by Mark Walhberg) was struggling to make ends meet by bartending part time. He had a passion for football so his friends convinced him go to the try-outs. This would end up changing his life and the face of football forever. The movie depicts the incredible journey of a man trying to better himself and make history by trying to become the NFL’s oldest rookie in history.
Invincible is very profound and very inspiring. In fact, it may be the first movie since Rocky where you leave the theater and go straight to the gym. Invincible is a great experience for many reasons - not the least of which is that it's based on a true story, but not a story that many know well. So, as Wahlberg's character goes through countless challenges and disappointments, there's extraordinary anticipation as to how it's going to all turn out . . . so much anticipation and excitement that you're guaranteed chills! Even though the movie drags ever so slightly towards the end, there are at least a few monumental scenes that everyone should see. So, if you're a football fan, Mark Wahlberg fan, or just a fan of the human spirit, Invincible is a guaranteed touchdown.
